Nursing Program Stethoscope Ceremony

Third-year nursing students received engraved Littmann double-sided stethoscopes in a ceremony at the beginning of the fall semester, marking their transition to clinical practice. Senior nursing students already working in clinical practice present the stethoscopes to their junior classmates. This unique tradition, started in 2019 by Lauren Lapierre ’19, ensures that each nursing student enters the field with equitable access to this necessary but expensive equipment. Lapierre is now a cardiac nurse in the operating room at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Massachusetts.

Each stethoscope is purchased with funds raised from generous donors, including PSU faculty, local healthcare organizations and community members. This year, Barton Healthcare Staffing donated a significant portion of the cost of stethoscopes, which totaled $3,060.

The event was highlighted in a WCAX-TV news feature.
